Speed Training Tips for Athletes to Build Real Speed

Everyone wants to be faster.
A quicker first step. Better acceleration. More pop. That lovely feeling of separating from a defender while they suddenly look like they are running through pudding.
But real speed is not built by showing up once, sprinting until your lungs file a complaint, and calling it “training.” Anyone can make an athlete tired. That is not the goal.
The goal is to help athletes move better, build confidence, develop strength, recover well, and repeat high-quality work long enough for the body to adapt. Speed is a skill, not just a mood.
At a speed training camp, the best work is not about chaos. It is about teaching athletes how to run with purpose, control their body, and carry that skill into games, races, and practices. This is especially true for young athletes, where great habits can last for years.

1. Train when no one is watching
The work that changes an athlete is often the work nobody sees.
People see the game, the race, the highlight, or the big personal best. They do not always see the early warm-ups, the mobility work, the boring-but-useful drills, or the recovery days when the athlete did the right thing instead of pretending they were invincible.
Training when no one is watching builds more than physical ability. It builds discipline.
Motivation is great, but it is unreliable. It is that friend who says, “I’m definitely coming,” then texts five minutes before and claims their dog ate their car keys. Discipline is the friend who shows up with water, a plan, and clean shoes.
Athletes do not need constant applause to improve. They need steady habits.
That can look like:
Doing a proper warm-up before every sprint session
Taking the first few reps seriously, not just the flashy ones
Getting enough sleep before hard training days
Practising movement skills when nobody is filming
Choosing recovery instead of extra junk volume
Every quality repetition matters, even when no one claps. Especially then.
2. Borrow confidence until you build it
Confidence does not always arrive before action. Sometimes action has to go first.
Walk onto the field like you belong. Stand tall. Use your voice. Attack the drill. Encourage teammates. Confidence often grows after the body gets proof that it can handle the task.
This matters in speed work because hesitation shows up in movement. An unsure athlete may stand too tall, take short choppy steps, or pull back right when they should push. A confident athlete commits.
Borrowed confidence is not fake. It is practice.
Try this before a sprint:
Stand tall.
Take one slow breath.
Relax the face and shoulders.
Look where you are going.
Attack the first three steps with intent.
That small routine tells the brain, “We have done this before.” The brain likes familiar things. It is basically a cautious little raccoon wearing a helmet.
For athletes who struggle with anxiety or pressure, routines are powerful. They create a repeatable starting point. The goal is not to erase nerves. Nerves are part of sport. The goal is to act with purpose while the nerves ride along in the passenger seat.
3. Learn to accelerate before chasing top speed
Many athletes want to sprint faster, but they skip the part that matters most in many sports: the first few steps.
Football, hockey, soccer, basketball, rugby, lacrosse, baseball, and court sports often reward acceleration. That means getting moving quickly from a stop, a shuffle, or a change of direction.
Great acceleration is not random. It has a few key pieces:
A strong forward lean from the whole body
Powerful pushes into the ground
Arms that drive with purpose
Feet that strike under or slightly behind the hips early on
Eyes focused ahead, not staring at the shoes like they owe money
Acceleration should feel like pushing the ground away, not reaching forward with the foot. Reaching too far in front often acts like a brake. It is the sprinting version of hitting the gas while gently tapping the brake, which is rude to your hamstrings.
Good speed training for athletes often starts with short distances, clean technique, and full effort with enough rest. If every sprint looks worse than the last one, the workout has turned into conditioning. Conditioning has its place, but it is not the same as speed development.

4. Run fast only when the body is ready to run fast
Speed work needs freshness. That does not mean every session should feel easy. It means athletes need enough energy and control to move well.
True sprint training is high effort and high quality. Sloppy reps teach sloppy movement. The body is always learning, even when the lesson is “flail harder and hope.”
A simple rule helps: if sprint times are dropping off, technique is falling apart, or the athlete looks like a baby deer on roller skates, it is time to stop or change the drill.
Quality beats quantity in speed sessions.
A smart session may include:
A gradual warm-up
Mobility work for hips, ankles, and upper body
Sprint drills that connect to the goal
Short sprints with full rest
Strength or jumping work if appropriate
A cool-down
The rest matters. Research and coaching practice both support the idea that speed training needs enough recovery between high-effort sprints so the nervous system can produce fast, coordinated movement again. In plain English, if you want to train fast, you need to actually be able to move fast.
That is why sprint training exercises should not feel like a punishment. They should feel sharp, focused, and repeatable.
5. Build strength that shows up on the field
Strength helps speed, but only when it supports better movement.
An athlete does not need to lift like a competitive power athlete to become faster. They need the right kind of strength for their sport, age, training history, and body.
Strong legs help push into the ground. A strong trunk helps transfer force without wobbling. Strong hips help with acceleration, change of direction, and deceleration. Strong feet and ankles help with stiffness and bounce during sprinting.
That does not mean loading every athlete with heavy weights on day one. For youth speed training, the first step is often body control. Can the athlete land well? Can they squat with control? Can they hold posture while moving? Can they stop without their knees collapsing inward?
Good strength training may include:
Squats and split squats
Hip bridges and hinge patterns
Calf and foot strengthening
Core control exercises
Jumps and landings
Pulling and pushing movements for the upper body
The goal is not to look tired at the end. The goal is to become more capable.
Strength is like adding a better engine. Technique is learning how to drive it. Recovery is remembering not to pour maple syrup into the fuel tank, even if this is Canada.
6. Take recovery seriously, because speed hates exhaustion
Recovery is where the body adapts.
Training gives the signal. Recovery lets the body respond. Skip recovery long enough and performance usually suffers. Mood can dip, soreness can linger, focus can drop, and small aches can become loud enough to start their own podcast.
For athletes dealing with stress, school pressure, work demands, trauma history, or anxiety, recovery matters even more. The body does not separate life stress and training stress into neat little folders. It feels the total load.
Useful recovery habits include:
Sleeping enough for age and training demands
Eating regular meals with protein, carbohydrates, and colourful foods
Drinking water throughout the day
Taking easy days seriously
Talking to a coach or clinician when pain changes movement
Having calm routines before bed
For parents, this is a big one. More training is not always better. More quality is better. A young athlete who is exhausted, sore, and mentally drained does not need another brutal session. They may need food, sleep, support, and a plan that treats them like a human being, not a rechargeable drill.

7. Make agility more than fancy footwork
A lot of athletes think agility means tap-dancing through cones at lightning speed. Cone drills can help, but sport is messier than that.
Real agility includes reading, reacting, stopping, starting, and changing direction with control. It is physical and mental. The brain has to notice what is happening, then the body has to respond.
Good speed and agility training teaches athletes to:
Slow down safely
Cut without losing balance
Keep the chest and hips in useful positions
React to visual or verbal cues
Re-accelerate after changing direction
A drill should eventually connect to sport. If an athlete can fly through a ladder but cannot defend, evade, or separate in a game, the ladder is mostly providing foot confetti.
That does not make simple drills useless. They can teach rhythm, coordination, and posture. They are just one ingredient, not the whole meal.
8. Follow a plan instead of collecting random workouts
Random workouts create random results.
A structured plan helps decide what to train, when to push, when to back off, and how to progress. That is the difference between athlete performance training and “I saw this online, so now we suffer.”
A good plan should match the athlete’s:
Sport
Age
Training history
Injury history
Current season
Growth and development stage
Stress and recovery needs
For example, an athlete in-season may need short, sharp speed work with low volume. An off-season athlete may have more room to build strength, acceleration, and mechanics. A returning athlete after injury may need gradual exposure before full-speed sprinting.
This is where coaching matters. A coach can see details the athlete may miss, such as posture, foot strike, arm action, or signs of fatigue. A good coach also knows when to stop. That skill is underrated. Anyone can yell “one more rep.” Knowing when one more rep is a terrible idea is the art.

How often should athletes do speed training?
Most athletes do well with two to three focused speed sessions per week, depending on sport, age, season, and recovery. Hard sprint work should not be crammed into every day. Fast training needs fresh legs.
What age should kids start speed training?
Kids can start learning running mechanics, coordination, balance, and safe movement early, as long as it is age-appropriate and fun. Young athletes do not need adult-style intense training. They need great basics, good coaching, and room to enjoy sport.

Is getting tired the sign of a good speed session?
Not always. Fatigue can happen, but it is not the main goal. A good speed session should produce fast, clean, powerful reps. If the athlete only leaves exhausted, the session may have trained toughness more than speed.
The real work is quieter than the highlight
Speed is built through small choices repeated over time.
Train when no one is watching. Borrow confidence until it becomes real. Learn how to accelerate. Get strong in ways that help sport. Recover like it matters, because it does. Follow a plan instead of chasing random sweat.
The fastest athletes are not always the ones who do the most. They are often the ones who do the right work, with intent, long enough for it to show up when it counts.
And when it does show up, it looks sudden to everyone else. Funny how “sudden” can take months of quiet work.
